Detroit Agate transforms an extraordinary piece of automotive history into a ring unlike anything created from a conventional gemstone.
At its centre is genuine Fordite, a remarkable material formed from layers of automotive paint that accumulated during the traditional car-manufacturing process. Layer upon layer of paint built up, hardened and cured over time, eventually creating dense deposits filled with hidden colour.
When Fordite is carefully cut and polished, those layers are revealed as incredible flowing patterns of red, blue, white, black, silver and other colours.
No two pieces are the same — which means no two Detroit Agate rings will ever be exactly alike.
What is Fordite?
Despite sometimes being called Detroit Agate, Fordite isn’t actually a natural agate or gemstone.
It is a piece of industrial history.
During earlier generations of automotive manufacturing, oversprayed paint accumulated on equipment and surfaces within paint facilities. Repeated cycles of painting and curing gradually created thick deposits containing layer upon layer of hardened automotive paint.
Once cut across those layers and polished, the material reveals remarkable patterns reminiscent of natural agate.
Today, genuine vintage Fordite is collected, cut and transformed into jewellery and other pieces of wearable automotive history.
From Automotive History to Wearable Art
Each piece of Fordite tells its own story through its colours.
One section may reveal dramatic red, white and black layers. Another may contain blue, silver, cream or completely unexpected combinations.
We carefully prepare the Fordite and set it into the centre channel of a polished black ceramic ring, where the deep black band provides a striking contrast against the multicoloured automotive paint.
The result is contemporary, distinctive and completely individual.
Every Ring is Unique
The Fordite shown in our photographs is representative of the material used to create these rings, but your ring will have its own individual pattern and colour distribution.
That’s part of what makes Fordite so special.
The colours aren’t printed or artificially reproduced to make every ring identical. They come from the actual layers contained within the piece of Fordite used to make your ring.
Your ring is genuinely one of a kind.
Polished Black Ceramic
Detroit Agate is made using a polished black ceramic band chosen to frame the Fordite without competing with its extraordinary patterns.
The rich black finish creates a clean contemporary appearance while allowing the reds, blues, whites, silvers and other colours within the Fordite to become the focal point of the design.
The ring also features a smooth comfort-fit interior for comfortable everyday wear.
Choose Your Width
Detroit Agate is available in two widths:
6mm — a slightly narrower, refined profile.
8mm — a broader ring that provides greater visual presence and more space to showcase the Fordite.
Because Fordite varies naturally from piece to piece, the appearance of the inlay will also vary according to the individual material and width selected.
Ring Sizes
Available in US sizes 4–17, including half sizes.
We strongly recommend confirming your correct ring size before ordering, particularly with ceramic rings where accurate sizing is important.
